The Kitsap Creative Reuse Collective is an informal network of people residing in Kitsap County, WA working together to bring a creative reuse center (CRC) to the region.  As of July 2014, there is only one CRC in all of Washington State (which is not located in Kitsap County). Its our goal to see Kitsap County become home to the second.  

 

The Kitsap Creative Reuse Collective was founded by Angie Canavan, a resident of the city of Bremerton, Kitsap Co., WA.  In 2011, Angie conducted what she dubbed The Dumpster Project.  She and her partner went "diving" daily for three months (from April - August 2011), removing items still in usable condition from local dumpsters and documenting the findings on a blog (the blog is no longer active).  At the end of the three months, Angie successfully crowd-sourced $316 for materials to build a dumpster (her partner built it and she designed/painted/distressed it).  Angie then went on to display the findings in the dumpster at two local galleries (iZm Gallery, Sep. 2011 and OC Student Gallery, Oct. 2011).  You can read an article about Angie and The Dumpster Project that ran on the cover of The Kitsap Sun in July 2011 here.

 

During the course of the project, Angie learned about legal issues surrounding dumpster diving and discovered startling facts about waste management in Kitsap County, WA.  Wanting to do more to bring awareness to the issue of unneccesary waste with the intention of helping reduce the overall amount of waste produced within the region, in June 2014 Angie proposed the idea of establishing a local CRC to the people of Kitsap County, reaching out to the community through the social media site Facebook.  The response was overwhelmingly positive, so Angie formed the informal community group, The Kitsap Creative Reuse Collective.
